Regulators Move to Allow Mobile Phone Use on Aircraft
DECEMBER 15, 2004 - The FCC has voted to seek public comment on the
contentious issue of allowing consumers to use mobile phones during flights.
Current regulations call for mobile phones to be turned off after the cabin door
closes for departure.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already approved some wireless
equipment as safe for use on aircraft. Ultimately, the agency still must sign
off on any new electronic equipment to guarantee that it doesn't interfere with
aircraft navigation and electrical systems. Currently there is little scientific
evidence to support claims that wireless equipment actually interferes with
those systems.
Currently, domestic passengers can access e-mail and instant-messaging service
through Verizon Communications Inc.'s Airfone units, which are available on many
domestic carriers.
