AirTran to Begin Flying to Charlotte

FEBRUARY 18, 2005 -- AirTran Airways has announced that it will begin flying to Charlotte, N.C., in May.  This will be yet another challenge to struggling US Airways Group Inc., which has its largest hub there.

Airtran (a unit of AirTran Holdings Inc.) will operate four non-stop daily flights from Charlotte to its Atlanta hub, and two daily flights to Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI).  US Airways has 567 daily flights from Charlotte, including eight non-stops to Atlanta and nine daily flights to Baltimore-Washington.

Southwest may also be targeting Charlotte. Southwest has also entered Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, two other US Airways cities which AirTran also serves.
